According to the Sacramento State Sports Information Department, junior Camron Mbewa, sophomore Ramon Payne and senior Gary Austin Jr. are cleared to play in Saturday’s game against Montana State.

Payne and Mbewa were the Hornets starting safeties, while Austin Jr. was battling with Kenan Smith for the third wide receiver spot prior to the suspensions.

The three Hornets were suspended, along with senior running back Derard Barton and sophomore linebacker Anthony Palomariz, prior to last Saturday’s game against Eastern Washington.. The five players were not allowed to play against Eastern Washington, and were sent back to Sacramento from Washington on Friday night before the game.

According to SID, the five Hornets were suspended for breaking the athletic department’s code of conduct.

Barton, a senior, will sit out this Saturday’s game against Montana State, and will return next week versus the University of Montana. Palomariz, a sophomore, will be suspended for the rest of the season, but will be allowed to practice with the team.

The suspensions were handed out after all five players met individually with Hornet coach John Volek.

In Mbewa (junior) and Payne’s (sophomore) absence against Eastern Washington, safeties Robert Coleman and Jeremy Callaway stepped in and led the team in tackles, while Coleman had two interceptions. Kendall Riley, who replaced Barton, rushed for 95 yards. Smith made an acrobatic 29-yard touchdown catch in Austin Jr.’s absence.
