The Hornets hula danced around their Hawaiian competition this past week, coming away with a perfect 3-0 record. The Hornets rolled past the University of Hawaii-Hilo, University of Hawaii, and the University of Hawaii-Pacific by scores of 5-2, 4-3, 4-2 respectively.

Freshman Amanda Sanches, the Hornets No. 4 singles player, led the way for Sac State. Sanches recorded a perfect 3-0 record in Hawaii while improving her overall record to 10-1.

Gabriella Lundqvist (No. 1 singles) and Marta Gronowicz (No. 2 singles) both finished the trip with 2-1 records.

Lundqvist’s only loss came to Hawaii-Pacific’s Stephanie Kovacic, 6-3, 6-3. Kovacic is regarded as one of the top players in the nation.

The three victories give the Hornets a six-game winning streak heading into a two-match homestand.

“I think we’re doing real well,” Hornet coach Bill Campbell said. “Our only challenge are the injuries.”

Roberta Fessenko, Christina Revieccio and Sanches have all been recently hampered with injuries. Fessenko and Riviecco shared duties over the week. Fessenko lost her only match, while Riviecco split both of hers.

The team, which is made up of only two seniors and seven out of nine foreign players, made the most out of their five-day trip to the Aloha State.

“I think being together for a week gave the girls their best chance to be together, and get to know one another,” Campbell said.

Campbell said his team focused their first four days of the trip strictly on tennis, leaving at seven in the morning, and not getting back until seven at night.

The squad’s match scheduled for March 7th against Brigham Young University-Hawaii was cancelled due to rain. The match will not be rescheduled.

The Hornets, with momentum in their corner, returned home to take on University of Saint Louis on Monday. Scores, however,` were not available by presstime.

The Hornets will next take on San Jose State University on Friday at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club. The match is scheduled for 2:PM.
