Lipscomb University’s men’s basketball team probably should have checked for their wallets before Sacramento State left Nashville.

The Hornets, who lead the Big Sky Conference with 9.18 steals per game, recorded 11 thefts in an 83-71 victory over Lipscomb (3-11) on Saturday, snapping a four-game losing streak.

Sac State (5-7) had five players score 12-or-more points, including 16 from both senior small forward Derek Lambeth and his backup, freshman junior Emir Medunjanin. Medunjanin also finished with five steals.

Junior center Tony Champion and senior point guard Raashad Hooks both finished with 15 points, while freshman point guard DaShawn Freeman scored 12 points, had four steals and a team-high six rebounds.

Coming into Saturday’s game Freeman ranked eighth in the nation with 3.1 steals per game.

The Hornets shot 21-of-22 from the free throw line, and outscored the Bisons 40-30 in the second half after leading 43-41 at the half. Sac State also recorded their highest point total of the year with 83.

Matt Jarboe led Lipscomb with 16 points, including 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc.

The Hornets will next kick-off their Big Sky schedule with a road game at Portland State on Tuesday. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.

Forward Leo Cravey has been cleared to play on Tuesday after being academically ineligible during the fall semester. Forward Cedric Thompkins and guards Joseth Dawson and David Joiner, who were also academically ineligible in the fall, have not yet been cleared to play.
