Men?s basketball drops two; will play at Arco Arena on Saturday

When the Sac State men’s basketball team returned from their 0-2 road trip through Colorado State and San Diego State, head coach Jerome Jenkins’ “to-do” list was very short: Learn to win on the road.

“We’re two different teams right now,” Jenkins said. “We’re a different team at home than we are on the road. We went out on the road and got a little bit intimidated.”

The Hornets were in San Diego on Saturday, and while they got out to a 7-0 lead, they couldn’t hang on to that advantage as San Diego State went on a 16-2 run, and didn’t let Sac State back in the game, winning 91-69.

Rickie Glenn and Pablo Gonzales continued to play strong for the Hornets as Glenn had a game high 26 points to go along with seven rebounds, and Gonzales added 15 points. These two seniors look to be a constant this year, but it’s other areas where Jenkins looks for the Hornets to improve upon.

“We need other guys to step up too,” Jenkins said. “We need to get better defensively on the road. I was impressed with the way that David Joyner played in San Diego, but overall we need to get stronger.”

Sac State was only behind the Aztecs by 11 points at the half, but San Diego State came out hot in the second half, and put the Hornets away.

The previous Tuesday, the Hornets were in Colorado State where they struggled offensively and the game turned into a 73-46 route.

The Hornets shot only .250 from the field, which included first half shooting woes where Sac State shot just 5-28. Colorado State was on the mark however, as they shot .610 for the game and they out-rebounded the Hornets 47-24.

Defensively, Sac State continued to apply pressure, and they forced 26 turnovers. Converting on those opportunities was another story, however.

While disappointed in the losses, Jenkins is not worried, and he feels that the team will grow from the experience.

“This year is going to be a learning process,” he said. “We aren’t panicking because we’re not out to set the world on fire. We’re going to go out and learn every game.”

Gonzales led Sac State with 10 points in the game, with Glenn and freshman Chris Armstrong adding eight apiece.

The Hornets play at Southern Utah today, and will return home to play Loyola Marymount at Arco Arena on Saturday.
