The game of the year
October 25, 2000
Four words: “Let?s get it on!” Forget about the Big Sky, forget about the thought of three fumbles, and forget about the possibility, or impossibility as it may be, for the playoffs. It?s the Causeway Classic and I?m pumped up.
This game is huge in my mind. It?s as big as USC vs. UCLA, Dodgers vs. Giants, or Leno vs. Letterman. If the subway series between the Yankees and Mets lasts until next Saturday, the Causeway match-up will be even bigger than that to me. I feel like Zack Morris and A.C. Slater on the brink of the much anticipated Bayside vs. Valley match-up. It?s once a year, and it?s more than a game, it?s a rivalry.
I hope our boys will kill the Aggies on Saturday. No, I hope they demolish them, kick them when they?re down, and make them squeal like a bunch of sick pigs in heat. Why? Because I hate them. Forgive my political incorrectness, but that?s the competitive nature that this type of rivalry brings to me. That?s why this game is unlike any other that Sac State will play this year.
Do you realize that UC Davis almost went undefeated last year? But they didn?t because Sac State beat them. It?s ironic, because right now the Hornets are in that very same, unique position. UC Davis is undefeated, and they are ranked third in the Division II football polls. It would be sweet to take that away from them again. Not for them to fall out of that position, but for Sac State to take it away. The win is not a foregone conclusion, however.
The Aggies are tough. They?ve beaten some of the same teams as Sac State has this year, and they?ve done so in an impressive fashion. They?re fresh off handing Cal Poly a 63-28 drubbing, and they also beat Saint Mary?s on Sept. 30 by a score of 55-14.
The pressure in this game is going to be mainly on Sac State?s defense?namely the secondary. UC Davis has been stellar offensively this year, especially in the passing game. They haven?t scored less than 45 points in a game (averaged 55 per game), and their quarterback, J.T. O?Sullivan, has been unbelievable. He has the highest passing rating that I?ve ever even heard of, 199, and has thrown for over 400 yards in their last two games. I hate to admit it, but they have some skills. The Hornets can?t afford to make any mistakes against them, but I think they?ll be ready because they?re always ready for the Causeway.
Sac State has the ability to take these jokers off of their 7-0 soapbox. The Hornets? defense is much better than either Saint Mary?s or Cal Poly?s, and they have something else that those other teams don?t: a severe hatred for UC Davis, and the Causeway title is on the line. Our boys don?t want to lose to Davis. While the game is technically a road game for the Hornets, it really won?t be. It?s going to be held at Sacramento City College. Simply translated, there will be as many if not more of us Sac State fans attending as there will be on the UC Davis side. In fact, the game is even closer to our campus than it is to Davis?.
Advantage: Sac State. So, let?s get out there and make some noise. Let?s give Sac State that advantage. The Causeway only comes once a year. So let?s make it meaningful. Comments?Email [email protected]
