Sac State loses close one in Fresno

Fresh off a 13-game homestand, the Sacramento State baseball team lost to Fresno State 7-5 Wednesday evening at Pete Beiden Field in Fresno.

Sac State starting pitcher Tanner Olson completed five innings and gave up four runs, two of which were earned, on five hits with one strikeout and two walks. Austin Root, Ryan Smith and Jonny Palsha pitched one inning apiece to finish out the game. Root gave up two earned runs on two hits, both of which were home runs. Smith pitched a one-hit inning allowing no runs, and Jonny Palsha gave up one run in the eighth by way of a home run.

Sac State (17-11, 6-0 in the Western Athletic Conference) didn’t waste any time, and the Hornets brought the first run across the plate in the top of the first inning. Shortstop Trent Goodrich started the inning with a one-out double to right center field. Goodrich advanced to third base on a fly ball to right field by designated hitter Matt Smith. Right fielder Andrew McWilliam was able to score Goodrich with two outs on a ground ball through the left side of the infield, giving Sac State an early 1-0 lead.

Fresno State (21-9) answered in the bottom of the second inning with two runs of their own. After recording a quick two outs, Jesse Medrano started off the two-out rally with a single to right center field. Kevin Viers followed with a single of his own through the right side of the infield. Nick Warren drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases for Korby Batesole, who hit a two RBI single to right field to take the lead 2-1 for Fresno.

Fresno State built on its lead in the bottom of the fifth as the Bulldogs scored two more runs on a throwing error by Goodrich.

The Hornets answered with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth inning on a lead-off home run by McWilliam, recording his second RBI of the game. The Hornets manufactured the other run of the inning on a single by first baseman Vinny Esposito, followed by a double by catcher Gunner Pollman and two consecutive walks to third baseman Dan Deely and center fielder Bronson Grubbs.

Fresno State quickly replied with two runs of their own. Both runs were scored on solo home runs by Austin Guibor and Viers. Guibor also hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, for his second on the day.

Sac State scored one run each of the last two innings on an RBI double by left fielder Chris Lewis in the top of the eighth and an RBI double by McWilliam in the top of the ninth. This marked McWilliam’s third RBI of the game.

The Sac State offense was led by McWilliam, who went four for five with three RBIs and a run scored. Lewis went two for four with a double and an RBI. Goodrich and Smith both added a hit and a run scored for the Hornets. Grubbs added a hit and an RBI. Pollman and Esposito each went one for five.

Sac State will try to remain undefeated in WAC play as they take on CSU Bakersfield in Bakersfield, California this weekend, starting on April 9 at 6 p.m. CSU Bakersfield has not yet picked up a win in conference play, as the team has been swept by Grand Canyon and Seattle University.
