Sac State completes season sweep of Nevada

Sacramento State’s baseball team took its second victory of the year against Nevada, 7-2, on Tuesday in Reno.

Tanner Olson gave up two runs in the first inning but settled down and threw five scoreless innings afterwards. Olson gave up four hits total, with three strikeouts and just one walk. Jonny Palsha, Chad Perry and Tyler Beardsley each added one scoreless inning apiece.

Sac State wasted no time in Nevada and scored a run in the top of the first inning. Chris Lewis started the game off with a single to left field. Trent Goodrich followed with a single of his own to center field. Matt Smith advanced the runners to second and third with a ground ball to third base. Andrew McWilliam then hit a comebacker to the pitcher, which scored Lewis.

Nevada scored their only two runs of the game in the first inning of play. Leadoff hitter Justin Bridgman hit a single down the left field line and advanced to second base on a throwing error. Miles Mastrobuoni followed with an RBI double down the left field line. Trenton Brooks hit a single down the left field line as well, advancing Mastrobuoni to third base, who eventually scored on a sacrifice fly ball to left field by Jordan Pearce.

Sac State answered back in the top of the second inning to tie the ball game. Gunner Pollman led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. Brandon Hunley followed with a first-pitch double to left center field. Bronson Grubbs grounded out to second base, which allowed Pollman to score.

The Hornets took the lead and built on it in the fourth inning, with back to back home runs by Pollman and Hunley. Lewis also had an RBI double later in the inning.

Sac State also added two insurance runs in the eighth inning, on a two-RBI single to center field by Lewis.

The Hornets’ offense was led by Lewis, who went three for five with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Pollman and Hunley both went a perfect two for two on the day, including their back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning. Pollman had an RBI and three runs scored. Hunley also had a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Grubbs went one for three with an RBI and a run scored. Kody Reynolds and Goodrich each added a hit of their own.

Sac State baseball will return to Western Athletic Conference play when the Hornets face off against Chicago State for a three-game series at John Smith Field in Sacramento. Game one of the series will start at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 15, as they try to regain the No. 1 spot in the WAC standings.
