Women’s soccer advances in Big Sky Tournament

The Sacramento State women’s soccer team will be advancing in the Big Sky Tournament after defeating Eastern Washington 3-1 Thursday morning.

Sophomore forward Kayla Collins led the Hornets with two goals and one assist.

In the ninth minute junior forward Jennifer Lum scored for the first goal of the game, which was her third this season. Collins found Lum at the top of the box for an open shot.

Going into the second half the Hornets were up 1-0, and in the 47th minute Collins scored her first goal.

Junior Adaurie Dayak hustled down the field with the ball and kicked it across the Eagles’ goal, where she found Collins, who gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead.

During the 78th minute of the game, Eastern Washington freshman forward Devan Talley scored the Eagles first goal, her third of the season. But during the 87th minute Collins scored another goal, sealing the Hornets’ victory.

Eastern Washington led Sac State 19-14 on shots but the Hornets had the advantage 7-6 for shots on goal.

Junior goalie Molly McConnell totaled five saves and Eastern Washington’s Mallory Taylor had four saves.

Sac State will continue its tournament play at 10 a.m. on Friday against the No. 2 seed Northern Colorado in the semifinal game. The championship game will be held on Sunday in Moscow, Idaho.
