The Sacramento State women’s soccer team was defeated by Fresno State by a 1-0 score on Sunday afternoon.

The Hornets had a slow start but came back and fought hard throughout the second half, as they outshot Fresno State 17-15 overall.

“I was really happy with how we responded in that second half,” said Hornets’ coach Randy Dedini. “I felt like we came out and dominated play in the second half, dominated [time of] possession, dominated [scoring] chances on goal, I thought we responded from that first half really well.”

Bulldogs’ midfielder Peyton Cline scored in the 32nd minute of the game.

Sac State came out aggressive in the second half, taking 13 of its 17 shots.

Junior Jennifer Lum had a game-high five shots for the Hornets.

“We were attacking most of the second half and had more shots, we just need to finish them,” Lum said. “I am trying to attack more and try to get more shots to help my team score and hopefully win.”

The Hornets put seven shots on the goal throughout the game but could not get passed Bulldogs’ goalkeeper Dominique Banta, who had a game-high seven saves.

Sac State goalkeeper Destiny Butcher ended the game with four saves.

“I think today went well, we should have fought harder in the first half, I think we didn’t expect them to come out so strong,” Butcher said. “We’re a strong team, we definitely outplayed them in the second half completely, we should have come out with a result but sometimes soccer doesn’t go that way.”

The Hornets never gave up and played hard to the very last second, Butcher said.

“When we are down a goal, I think we really come back, we fight hard, we don’t really give up to the end, [and] til the last buzzer we were fighting hard,” Butcher said. “I love the fight we have, we don’t give up, that’s [a] big thing for our team.”

The Hornets will go on the road to play the University of Nevada on Friday, Sept. 18.
