Brad Bumgarner and John Quintanilla each scored a goal and James Del Curto had his first shutout of the season, as the Sacramento State Hornets (3-4-1) beat the Saint Mary College Gaels (3-6-1) by two goals in Moraga, CA on Sunday afternoon.

With the 2-0 win, the Hornets improved to 3-1-1 in their last five games. Going into their Oct. 1 game against Cal State Fullerton, the team has kept their opponents to no goals in their last two games.

Bumgarner, a redshirt freshman forward, was excited about the team’s win.

“I feel like if we get a goal before the enemy team, then we build confidence,” Bumgarner said. ” This time we held on until we could get that second goal.”

The game started off with a Javier Munoz foul only 11 seconds in. Midfielder Isaac Flores had three corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of the game before Bumgarner scored in the 21st minute. The goal was his third of the season.

The Gaels had three of five shots blocked in the first half, with the Hornets allowing no shots on goal in the half.

In the second half, the Hornets continued to pressure the Gaels. In the 69th minute, Quintanilla scored on a header with an assist from midfielder Christian Guzman. The team allowed a penalty kick to the Gaels’ Max Mirner in the 84th minute, but it was blocked by Del Curto.

Del Curto finished the game with two saves for the Hornets, who won by multiple goals for the first time this season.

Head coach Michael Linenberger praised the team’s improved attention to detail.

“I think early in the season, there were times when we played pretty and slow too often,” Linenberger said. “But when the game demanded we work and scrap, we did; and when it allowed us to play we slowed down and did what we had to do.”

With the win, the Hornets climbed up to third place in the Big West North division, a half game ahead of UC Davis (3-5-0).
