Mark Allen gives coffee to students

In promotion for the new movie “The Intern” Mark S. Allen came to campus to help celebrate interns.
Mark S. Allen filmed segments of “Good Day Sacramento” on campus Sept. 15 and gave students free coffee to celebrate interns and to promote the movie “The Intern.”
Before the set-up, Allen talked about why the event happened at Sacramento State.
Allen said Warner Bros. asked him to interview Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, and then asked if he would also like to give out coffee to interns at a college campus.
“I said yes, they said ‘while we’re at it, where should that be?’ I said Sac State,” Allen said.
The crowd didn’t deter Allen as he offered students the chance to be on TV to talk about their experiences as interns or to talk about their hopes of interning in the near future.
Ashley Goins said she wanted to talk about her experience as an intern at Krazy Mary’s Boutique after reading the email the school sent about the event.
Goins is currently working to get her bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising.
“It’s always about hard work and dedication because when you’re in the internship, you never know that the person that gave you the internship might hire you for the position or even help you network,” Goins said.
Steve Garcia was an intern for “Good Day Sacramento” for three months before he got hired on permanently five years ago.
“It’s been the best experience,” Garcia said of his job with the station.
While Goins was prepped and ready to talk about her internship experience, many students who walked by seemed to have no idea as to what was going on on campus.
Gustavo Iturriaga, a computer engineering major, said he walked over simply because he saw free coffee without taking notice of the camera or the people surrounding Allen.
Although Iturriaga didn’t talk on air, he said he was an intern at Taborda Solutions, an IT company and that he was working on a sales system that the company will use.
Faculty members from academic advising and the Career Center also stopped by and went on camera to talk about the process of helping students get internships.
Brigitte Clark, interim director at the Career Center, explained how the center helps students with internship opportunities.
“Students can come in to the Career Center because sometimes they don’t know how to find an internship, and then of course [we help students with] preparing for the internship whether it be looking at your skills, getting your resume together, practicing for the interview and then of course landing the internship,” Clark said.
Between 8:40 and 8:50 a.m., Allen, administrators and other students managed to draw a crowd of 30 people.
