Football hosts Portland State for final home game at Hornet Stadium

Football will have its final home game at Hornet Stadium on Saturday as they will host the Portland State Vikings at 2 p.m. The game will also be dedicated as Senior Day. The team’s 18 seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony before the last home game of their collegiate careers.

Sac State (5-5) is riding momentum after defeating Southern Utah in convincing fashion last week, 42-21. Quarterback Garrett Safron and wide receiver DeAndre Carter had a field day with the SUU secondary, as Carter set new school single-game records with 16 receptions for 273 yards.

Carter and Safron will finish their careers as two of the most decorated football players in Sac State history. Safron owns nearly every career and single-season passing record, and needs only 166 rushing yards to set the record for most career rushing yards by a quarterback in Big Sky Conference history.

He took a moment to reflect on the impressive rapport that he and Carter have built.

“[The chemistry] is something we worked on all summer, getting our timing down and knowing our strengths,” Safron said. “We’ve both put in a lot of work and it’s really shown out there on the field.”

Carter’s record-shattering game against SUU earned him FCS National Player of the Week honors as well as Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week. His 273 receiving yards was the most that any Division I player has compiled through the air this season. He needs just 145 yards to pass Morris Norrise for the second most career receiving yards in school history.

According to the star receiver himself, those records are currently obsolete as the Hornets focus on ending the season at 7-5. Even with his pending graduation and departure from the program Carter hopes to leave a lasting impact that will benefit young players in the future.

“We want to go out with two victories,” Carter said. “Even though Garrett and I are leaving this year, we want to get the momentum going for next year’s team. Hopefully we can give them something to build on with these last two games.”

Portland State (3-7) is coming off a 29-22 loss at the hands of No. 15 Montana State last week. The Vikings have lost three of their last four games and have only managed a 1-5 record on the road.

Since falling out of contention for a top finish in the conference, the Vikings have elected to play their redshirt freshman quarterback Josh Kraght. In his first start of the season against MSU, Kragt threw for 215 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for another 96 yards and a score.

Leading the Vikings’ rushing attack is running back Shaq Richard who enters this week with 613 yards and two scores on the ground, while the aerial attack is led by wide receiver Kasey Kloss and his 538 yards and four touchdowns.

Sac State coach Jody Sears is confident after a convincing win last week and fully believes in his team’s ability to finish out strongly.

“I know these guys are always ready,” Sears said. “Everybody deserves some credit for the way we’ve been playing. The players have worked their tails off, and the coaches and training staff have done an excellent job at getting them prepared.”

“We’re not reinventing the wheel here. We’re going to continue to go out and try to execute and win games,” he added.
