Hornets enter Homecoming game looking for back-to-back conference wins

Sacramento State (4-3) will look to grab a consecutive conference win this week as they host Cal Poly (3-3) this Saturday, Oct. 18 for Homecoming.

The Hornets will look to continue the tradition of Homecoming success as they have won seven of the last nine contests. A win would even out the all-time series against the Mustangs (17-16).

Sac State played another tight-knit, high-scoring game last week against Northern Colorado, escaping with a 43-38 victory.

The Hornet offense showed no signs of slowing down while racking up 499 yards of total offense with five touchdowns. They topped the 40-point mark for the fifth time this year and enter week 8 with 287 points scored.

Running back De’Jon Coleman enjoyed a coming out party as he set a new career-high with three rushing touchdowns. The junior’s contributions did not stop there; he also returned four kickoffs for 105 total yards and scooped up a blocked punt, returning it 8 yards for a touchdown. To top off his performance, he was credited with two tackles on special teams.

For the second time this season, the leading tackler of last week’s game was not Darnell Sankey. Senior Robbie Kendall compiled 13 tackles to put his total at 67 on the year, good for second on the team.

Sankey did, however, notch himself another double-digit tackle game as he finished with 11 of his own. The junior hopes to put on a show for what is sure to be an electrified Homecoming crowd.

“That’s the plan,” Sankey said. “I feel very confident going against Cal Poly. We go into every game with the same mindset and that is to perform our best and play ball.”

After recording four sacks last game, the Hornet defense now faces the challenge of yet another speedy dual-threat quarterback in Cal Poly’s Chris Brown.

Besides a respectable passing line of 818 yards and five touchdowns at a 64.2 percent completion clip, Brown also leads the Mustangs with 603 yards and eight scores on the ground.

Sankey acknowledged how dangerous Brown could be in the open field.

“Chris Brown is a quick and agile runner,” Sankey said. “We need to make sure we execute our assignments to slow him down.”

Wide receiver DeAndre Carter will look to continue his high-scoring ways as he has caught a touchdown pass in 12 of the past 16 games. The team captain was focused on leading his squad into another tough conference match up.

“We had a great win against Northern Colorado and a solid week of practice,” Carter said. “Now it’s time to go out and handle business against Cal Poly.”

Coach Jody Sears said a high-scoring shootout between potent offenses often results in an entertaining game, but is remaining focused on his defensive principles.

“It’s a lot of fun when you’re putting up points like that,” Sears said. “But as a defensive coach, you’ve got to drill it into your guys that they’ve got to be defensively sound.”

Sears will rely on his defense to contain a Mustang team that comes in averaging a robust 327.8 rushing yards per game.

Kickoff for this Homecoming game will be at 6:05 p.m. Fans who cannot make it out to Hornet Stadium can still enjoy the game free of charge on www.WatchBigSky.com.
