Football hosts Montana State for conference play

Sacramento State will try to stay perfect at home as it heads into a showdown with Big Sky Conference foe Montana State Saturday Oct. 4 at Hornet Stadium.

The Hornets are 2-0 at home thus far but will have their hands full with the Bobcats who come in ranked No. 13. It will be the first conference game at home for the Hornets this season.

Historically, the Hornets have struggled against the Bobcats, trailing the all-time series 6-14.

Sac State lost 44-24 to Idaho State last week, but not without putting up some whopping offensive numbers in the process as the two teams combined for 1,171 total yards.

Quarterback Garrett Safron added to his lofty season totals by throwing for 382 yards and running for another 79.

Safron linked up with wide receiver DeAndre Carter for three touchdowns through the air, who enjoyed the fifth 100-yard receiving game of his career and third on the season. Carter accounted for 158 of Safron’s passing yards and his 14 catches set a new career-high and also tied him for second most in single-game school history.

Carter and fellow receiver Nnamdi Agude became the first pair of Sac State players to each haul in at least 150 yards receiving in the same game, as Agude finished with 11 catches for 153 yards of his own. Agude also boasts three 100-yard receiving games on the young season.

Despite the healthy offensive statistics, the team is focused on adding to the win column.

“All of us [have to get better]” Carter said. “We’ve got to keep our confidence high and bounce back next game.”

The Hornets have also been getting positive contributions on the defensive side of the ball. In the wake of Darnell Sankey’s ejection from the Idaho State game, true freshman Tyler Meteer stepped in and finished with 16 tackles.

“I always like a challenge and I love my team,” Meteer said. “I’m just living the dream,” he said of the increase in playing time.

Meteer and the rest of the defense will certainly have a challenge in containing Montana State quarterback Dakota Prukop, who has thrown for 1150 yards and eight touchdowns on the season. He enters this week’s game with an average efficiency rating of 166.39. Much like Safron, Prukop is also dangerous with his legs as he has ran 75 times for 320 yards and six scores.

Sac State coach Jody Sears says he will be relying on his defensive leaders to execute the game plan against another tough opponent.

“Our linebacking corps has been really solid,” Sears said. “Darnell Sankey and Henry Fernandez have done a great job of leading those guys and getting everyone lined up.”

Kick-off will be at 6:05 p.m. for what will be the team’s “Pink Game.” Hornet players will wear pink gloves, socks, and sweatbands to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Sacramento State will donate all proceeds from the game to Sutter Health.
