Sand Volleyball sweeps Cal in final home game

Sacramento State’s sand volleyball team defeated UC Berkeley 3-2 in the last home game on Saturday afternoon. 

For the first time this entire season, none of the matches were taken to 3-2 decisions – each of them were quick 2-0 matches.

Juniors Kayla Beal and Katie Aprile defeated Cal’s Kat Brown and Katarina Milosavljevic 21-6 and 21-12, putting Beal and Aprile at a 5-1 record.

Beal had a total of 12 kills out of 18 attempts and had only two errors for a .555 hitting percentage while Aprile had nine kills out of 13 attempts and one error for a .615 hitting percentage.

Freshmen Sloan Lovett and Lauren Aikels also won both matches at 21-16 against Cal freshmen Mary McKennon and Alyssa Jensen. Lovett hit eight kills out of 16 attempts and Aikels had 12 kills out of 32 attempts. The young duo now has a 2-4 record.

To finish the day, seniors Kelsey Elton and Breanne Menees defeated Cal’s Christina Higgens and Janelle Jordan for the second time of the season with close scores of 22-20 and 21-19. This pair now also has at a 2-4 record.

Although the Hornets defeated the Golden Bears, the teams of seniors Sydney Kordic and Jessie Genger, and junior Hannah Hettinga and freshman Katelyn Ivy lost and dropped their team records to 2-4 and 1-4 respectively.

The last games of the season will be in a tournament at Stanford University on April 21. The Hornets will face the University of San Francisco and Stanford.
