Sacramento State made its presence known on the first day of the Mustang Classic Tournament in San Luis Obispo Friday that started off winning a doubleheader against Rutgers University and the University of Nevada, 4-1 and 7-6 respectively.

The Hornets started slow in their first game against Rutgers trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning.

It was not until the sixth inning that the Hornets finally made it a game when Kayla Papez hit an RBI-single, allowing Paige Martin to run in to tie the score.

The Hornets kept the momentum going in the seventh inning which brought in three runs on four hits. With two runners on base, Emily McCormick hit the ball toward right field, which allowed for a two-run triple. Paige Martin then finished the inning with a single, bringing McCormick across the home plate.

Sac State pitcher Caitlin Brooks threw 99 pitches in the first game and allowed only four hits an unearned run.

The win gave the Hornets their fourth win in a row.

The second game against Nevada started off looking like a blow out, but Nevada would not go down without putting up a fight.

The Hornets scored seven runs with six hits in the bottom of the second inning, but the Wolfpack responded after Sara Parsons answered with a home run that brought in three RBIs.

Nevada extended its lead to 7-6, however that would be its last runs of the game.

The Hornets pulled out with the win with runs in the fourth and fifth innings and ended the game with a season high in nine runs, eight RBIs and two triples.

So far, the Hornets look to be in good shape for the next two days of the tournament with a 2-0 record.

Tomorrow, they have another doubleheader against Cal Poly at 4:30 p.m. and Northern Illinois 7 p.m.
