Apply for The State Hornet

State Hornet Staff

ABOUT: The State Hornet is the student-run newspaper of Sacramento State. Students here can earn course credit (JOUR197A or internships for other departments, subject to approval), and in some cases, scholarships.

ELIGIBILITY: We accept staffers from a variety of disciplines and majors, but you must be enrolled in at least six units at Sacramento State. Before being accepted as a member of the State Hornet staff, you may be required to demonstrate your skills or your potential for learning new skills. Some coursework or work experience is preferred for some positions (see below). All students who are accepted must study journalism ethics and pass a short test demonstrating their basic understanding of journalism ethics before submitting work for publication.

TRAINING: The Hornet can provide on-the-job training for students with little experience, but be advised that working here requires dedication, strict adherence to deadlines, excellent critical thinking skills and resourcefulness. Students who don’t demonstrate those traits will be removed from the staff and will be dropped from the course, or fail the course if it’s too late to drop. Students who work hard and show eagerness to learn will find this is a friendly and fun place to work, and they will learn a LOT.
