The State Hornet Publications Board named Alex Poggione editor in chief Monday for 2012-13.

Poggione, who has been the Hornet’s features editor for three semesters, succeeds 2011-12 Editor-in-Chief Dustin Nosler at the helm of Sacramento State’s student-run newspaper. The State Hornet publishes 29 regular weekly issues during the academic year, as well as special issues during the university’s summer and winter breaks.

In her application for the position, Poggione wrote, “I have a strong desire to incite positive change and help people reach higher levels of achievement than they would on their own. … My goal is to lift up those around me to produce consistently a quality product.”

During a presentation to students in the lab class that produces the Hornet, Poggione told the staff she wants to make changes that capitalize on the strengths of the newspaper’s top students. She also said she plans to dedicate one copy editor solely to ensuring stories meet the Hornet’s accuracy and ethics standards.

“The newspaper is at a juncture that creates ideal conditions for innovation, in terms of staff turnover,” said Hornet Faculty Adviser Holly Heyser. “I’m confident that Alex will lead the Hornet through changes that will push us in a positive direction.”
