The Sacramento State women’s rowing team took home four medals at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships Sunday, but finished second overall in team points behind Gonzaga University and missed winning the conference championship title.

The tournament began on Saturday and all five of the Hornets’ entries performed well enough and made it to today’s grand final regatta.

The varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight, varsity four and novice four were the five squads to make it for the Hornets.

The second varsity eight and the varsity four won the silver medal, while the varsity eight and novice eight took home the bronze. The novice four were the only squad to not take home a medal.

With four most prestigious squads winning a medal, it marks the second time in school history that the Sac State rowing team has won four medals in the WIRA Championships. The Hornets did it last year as well.

But the four medals were not enough to beat the team points champion Gonzaga Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs edged out the Hornets 344 to 338 after taking home the gold in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four finals.

The Hornets’ 338 points turned out to be enough to sail by Humboldt State (334), Western Washington (296) and San Diego State (293).

Senior Sarah Pivonka, junior Shelley Zakskorn and sophomore Erika Busch were named to the all-WIRA first team and senior Sadeeka Dosu and sophomore Ashley Ferko were named to the second team.

The WIRA Championships serve as the Hornets’ conference championship, but the season continues in two weeks.

Part of the Hornets’ team will compete at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia on May 11-12, while the other part of the team heads out to Lake Natoma for the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships on May 12.
