Quran Jones, the suspect in last year’s killing of his dorm mate Scott Hawkins, pleaded today not guilty by reason of insanity.

Jones, 21, was accused of one count of homicide, three counts of attempted murder and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.

Sacramento Superior Court Judge Marjorie Koller appointed two doctors to examine Jones. Results will be released at Jones’ next court appearance at 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 7 at the Sacramento County Main Jail, Department 61.

Court documents state that on Oct. 21, 2009, Jones fatally beat Hawkins, 23, with a baseball bat inside their American River Courtyard residence hall suite.

Jones, now paralyzed, was shot by campus police officers with at least seven pepper ball shots. Court documents state Jones lunged at the police officers with an 8-inch knife. Police then fired three gun shots at Jones, striking his abdomen, right arm and left buttock and eventually subduing him.

Hawkins was pronounced dead on arrival at the UC Davis Medical Center. He died of blunt force trauma from the attack.

New evidence, such as a stab wound to Hawkins’ brain and Jones’ written statement saying “I kill people,” were released at a preliminary hearing last month.
