On Tuesday, nearly 500 students attended the wellness exposition fair, which was the first of its kind and put on by the Career Center, in the University ballroom.

The fair had about 60 booths of people and groups that participated and included different agencies, graduate programs, major programs and other departments. All of the booths represented the seven areas of wellness, which include career, financial, social, cultural, environmental, physical and emotional.

Ashley Lewis, who is a career counselor and cooperative education coordinator, organized the fair and said she’s been wanting to do something like this for a while, and with the recent opening of the Well, she thought now would be a good time to do so.

All of the groups represented at the fair sought to educate students as well and to provide information about opportunities to work and volunteer and intern, Lewis said.

Melissa Vandenheuvel, senior recreation parks and tourism administration major, said she used to come to fairs like these at Sac State all the time as a student, but this time she came representing the recreation parks and tourism major administration.

“You have to get your foot out of that door and meet professionals and see what other people are offering, especially with the economy right now. This is a great resource for students, and they should take advantage of it,” said Vandenheuvel.

Zack Piotrowski, a junior recreation parks and tourism administration major, agreed and said it was important to for students to know what opportunities are available on-campus.

“I know that as a student myself, when I first came here I had no idea what we had on campus, we have so many options. So I think it’s a great idea we have events like this a few times a year, ” Piotrowski said.

Other organizations and groups that were represented also believed that besides just networking, the fair was important in order to promote health and wellness.

“People are always sick, people always need help, so I think that it would be a field that is always available,” said Christina Waite, professional relations specialist.
