The Sacramento State’s men’s soccer team beat Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponent San Jose State 4-3 in its last home game of the season and remain undefeated in conference play.

The Hornets took the lead early in the first period when junior midfielder Fernando Cabadas scored his first goal of the season on a cross from senior forward Jason Duvall, who sent a pass from freshman defender Oscar Torico.

Cabadas kicked his goal in from the right side into the lower corner of the net passed San Jose goalkeeper Jonathan Lester.

The Hornets possessed the ball for the majority of the first period, though the Hornets outshot the Spartans by one shot and San Jose’s best chances in the first half were three shots over the crossbar.

Duvall got his second point of the game on a goal assisted by Torico and junior midfielder Ernesto Carranza.

San Jose State started off the second half with a scoring chance when a pass across the front of the Hornets’ net went untouched, because no San Jose player was positioned to place a shot on net.

After stringing together some shots, San Jose’s persistence paid off when the Spartans scored their first goal on a shot from the top of the box, which sailed into the middle of the net.

San Jose State continued attacking with a couple shots over the top of the net and wide. The Spartans scored their second goal on a shot placed in the same position as the first from eight yards out.

San Jose State tied the game when a shot by midfielder Nick Cukar snuck past Sac State sophomore goalkeeper Bryan Oliver’s right side.

The Hornets answered back in only 0:14 seconds and reclaimed the lead with freshman forward Max Alverez’s ninth goal of the season.

Alverez chipped a pass from senior defender David von Stockhausen over the San Jose State goalkeeper and into the inside of the left goalpost.

The Hornets kept the lead for the remaining 9:23 seconds of the game to get their sixth conference win this season.

Sac State goes into the MPSF tournament as the top seed as it plays its first round against the lowest seed of the tournament.
