The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office has released the name of the victim in yesterday’s incident at the American River Courtyard residence hall on the Sacramento State campus.

Scott Gregory Hawkins, 23, of Santa Clara died after being taken to the hospital shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Campus police responded to a call at the residence hall at approximately 2:10 p.m. When they arrived, they found Hawkins injured on the floor of a five-person suite.

Police then attempted to subdue the alleged assailant, Quran Jones, who police say brandished a knife at them.

Sac State Police Chief Dan Davis said that officers were not able to subdue the suspect with pepper pellets and were forced to fire their weapons.

Jones is in stable condition at the UC Davis Medical Center.

Davis said Jones will be arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder of a police officer following his release from the hospital.

Davis and President Alexander Gonzalez held a press conference at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Courtyard to shed more light on the beating and shooting.

Gonzalez confirmed that Scott Gregory Hawkins was the one who died yesterday.

Jones and Hawkins were suite mates at Sac State living in the Courtyard.

Calling the attack a “terrible tragedy,” Gonzalez said the university is doing everything it can to assist the Sacramento Police Department, students and their families.

What caused Jones to attack Hawkins is still under investigation, Davis said.

Officers were briefly able to speak to Jones last night at UC Davis Medical Center, but Davis said they were unable to find out details behind the incident.

Jones had no known mental illness, Davis said.

More than one shot was fired by the police officers when Jones tried to attack them with a knife, Davis said.

“The officers tried to avoid using deadly force,” he said. “But they had no alternative.”

An 8-inch single edge kitchen knife was used, Davis said.

The Emergency Notification System alerted students hours after the incident occurred because police officers had the situation under control and there was no threat to the students, Gonzalez said.

Professional counselors are on site at the residence hall to assist students who may need any help.
