SPORTS: NFL Mock Draft April 22

Andrew Hazard

Now that the key players in this year’s free agency class have been signed, it is time to take a look at the newest installment of Drew-Bob’s mock draft. This is assuming teams do not trade their first round pick. The NFL draft order is based on each team’s win-loss record. The team with the worst record gets the first pick in each round of the seven-round draft, and the team that wins the super bowl gets the last pick of each round of the draft (pending trades). This year the Detroit Lions finished with the worst record in NFL history at 0-16. The 2009 NFL draft will be on April 25 through the 26 in New York City. This will be the final instillation of Drew-Bob’s mock draft before the draft begins. There will be an analysis of the first round this weekend. The Lions are now on the clock?

1. Detroit Lions – Mathew Stafford (QB-Georgia) – It has been reported that the Lions have already started contract negotiations with Stafford.

2. ST. Louis Rams – Jason Smith (OT-Baylor) – Smith has the most upside of any of the offensive line prospects. ST. Louis needs to protect the quarterback better in ’09.

3. Kansas City Chiefs – B.J. Raji (DT-Boston College) – It appears an article in Sports Illustrated that said Raji failed a drug test at the scouting combine was false. He would make a great addition to a young and talented defensive line.

4. Seattle Seahawks – Aaron Curry (LB-Wake Forest) – At one time Curry was thought to be a top-two pick. He would be a big upgrade for the departed Julian Peterson.

5. Cleveland Browns – Michael Crabtree (WR-Texas Tech) – The Browns traded tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. to Tampa Bay and wide receiver Braylon Edwards wants to be traded. This pick would be a great opportunity for Cleveland to steal the best wide receiver prospect the scouts have seen in a long time.

6. Cincinnati Bengals – Eugene Monroe (OT-Virginia) – The Bengals’ offensive linemen are getting old. Monroe is ready to make an immediate impact in the NFL.

7. Oakland Raiders – Andre Smith (OT-Alabama) – Owner Al Davis loves to take chances on questionable characters, and the Raiders need to rebuild the offensive line from scratch.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars – Jeremy Macklin (WR-Missouri) – Wide receiver is not a necessity with this pick due to the recent signing of free agent Torry Holt. Still, Macklin would give David Garrard another option offensively.

9. Green Bay Packers – Aaron Maybin (DE-Penn State) – Maybin can start at defensive end and linebacker.

10. San Francisco 49ers – Mark Sanchez (QB-USC) – Sanchez is a California-boy. San Francisco needs a quarterback (Alex Smith can officially be called a ‘bust’). It is a match made in pigskin heaven.

11. Buffalo Bills – Brian Orakpo – (DE-Texas) – The Bills need to improve on the defensively. Orakpo could be the best defensive line prospect in the ’09 class.

12. Denver Broncos – Tyson Jackson (DE-LSU) – Denver would be better off selecting a quarterback with this pick. Owner Pat Bowlen may not be comfortable with selecting Kansas State star, Josh Freeman.

13. Washington Redskins – Michael Oher (OT-Ole Miss) – The Redskins’ offensive line is getting old. Oher is quietly moving up general managers’ big board.

14. New Orleans Saints – Chris Wells (RB-Ohio State) – Reggie Bush is not an every-down-type of running back. New Orleans needs someone like Wells to help carry the load with the release of Deuce McAllister.

15. Houston Texans – Robert Ayers (DE-Tennessee) – A great week of practice at the Senior Bowl has put Ayers on the map. He undoubtedly will be set financially thanks to his great showing in Mobile, Ala.

16. San Diego Chargers – Vontae Davis (CB-Illinois) – Scouts are hoping Davis is not just a combine-standout like his brother Vernon.

17. New York Jets – Josh Freeman (QB-Kansas State) – The Jets have needs at running back and wide receiver but none as big as at quarterback.

18. Denver Broncos – Rey Maualuga (LB-USC) – Denver may need a quarterback for the future, but they need an impact defensive player more.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Everette Brown (DE-Florida State) Rookie head coach Raheem Morris will be hoping quarterback Josh Freeman is still available, but if he is not the Buccaneers need to address some concerns on defense.

20. Detroit Lions – Brian Cushing (LB-USC) – Cushing would help take double-teams off of linebacker Ernie Sims.

21. Philadelphia Eagles – Knowshown Moreno (RB-Georgia) – Moreno would be a great replacement for the Eagles once Brian Westbrook’s career is over.

22. Minnesota Vikings – Darius Heyward-Bey (WR-Maryland) – The Vikings know a thing or two about drafting great wide receivers in the first round of the draft. Bey is a diamond in the rough.

23. New England Patriots – Eben Britton (OT-Arizona) – Britton is one of many great offensive line prospects in this year’s draft.

24. Atlanta Falcons – Brandon Pettigrew (TE-Oklahoma State) – Atlanta now has a franchise quarterback in Matt Ryan, now they need to find someone he can throw to.

25. Miami Dolphins – Hakeem Nicks (WR-North Carolina) – The Dolphins hope to add a passing-attack to the wildcat spread that took them to the playoffs last season.

26. Baltimore Ravens – Clay Matthews (LB-USC) – Mathews will fit in Baltimore’s 3-4 scheme nicely.

27. Indianapolis Colts – Percy Harvin (WR-Florida) – The Colts should draft a defensive player but they will not. They will be looking for a third down receiver to replace Marvin Harrison.

28. Buffalo Bills – Max Unger (C-Oregon) – It is not often a center gets drafted in the first round. Buffalo needs a center to help young quarterback Trent Edwards.

29. New York Giants -Malcolm Jenkins (LB-Ohio State) – A poor performance at the scouting combine has really hurt Jenkins’ draft stock.

30. Tennessee Titans – Peria Jerry (DT-Ole Miss) – The Titans somehow must replace a huge hole on their defensive line now that Albert Haynesworth is with the Redskins.

31. Arizona Cardinals – Kenny Britt (WR-Rutgers) – If Arizona cannot resolve the contract dispute with Anquan Boldin then Britt would be a good replacement.

32 Pittsburgh Steelers – James Laurinaitis (LB-Ohio State) – Laurinaitis will thrive on the fact so many teams passed him up.
