Dan Muscatell, head coach of Sacramento State’s women’s basketball team, announced Monday that he is stepping down from his position, and has accepted an assistant coaching position at the University of Oregon.

Muscatell had previously served as an assistant coach for Oregon from 1999-2003. Upon returning to Oregon, he will be the assistant to new head coach Paul Westhead, former NBA and WNBA head coach.

During his six-year tenure at Sac State, Muscatell posted a 36-133 win-loss record. Prior to the 2008-09 season, Muscatell tied the school record for the most conference wins in a single season three different times.

The Hornets posted a 9-21 record overall and 7-9 conference record during the 2008-09 season, which was the best conference record Sac State posted since joining the Big Sky during the 1996-97 season.

Muscatell focused on the team’s academic success as well, and 20 of 21 student-athletes graduated under him.

There has been no announcement made on who will replace Muscatell as head coach for the Hornets.
