The Sacramento State men’s tennis team easily defeated Northern Arizona Saturday morning. The Hornets swept all three doubles matches against the Lumberjacks. A complete sweep of the singles events was almost in reach after Sac State won the first five before Northern Arizona salvaged the final match.

“We played well, we played great,” Head Coach Slava Konikov said.

Despite cold, windy playing conditions, Sac State looked sharp in the early morning competitions. In doubles, Anton Stryhas and Kiryl Harbatsiuk defeated David Flodberg and Jacob Tracy 8-2. Holden Ching and Marko Starcevic defeated Robin Pezzutto and Andrew Reiff 8-6 in the second court. Artur Klimenka and Jason Smith completed the sweep in the third court by defeating Chris Arena and Jaco Visagie 8-3.

“Our doubles are a lot better this year, last year our doubles weren’t as good,” assistant coach Kevin Kurtz said.

Singles started off with Smith beating Pezzutto in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Starcevic followed his teammate by defeating Tracy in the same fashion, 6-2, 6-0.

“I think we’re doing well, cause we had kind of a rough beginning with pretty good schools like USC and Tulsa, Oklahoma. But concerning all of other matches in Big Sky Conference were doing good,” Starcevic said.

Stryhas had a perfect match against Flodberg, winning 6-0, 6-0. Harbatsiuk also won in straight sets, defeating Reiff after a long second set, 6-2, 7-5.

“First set was really good for me, I was playing very aggressive.” But second set was a little bit softer and he got some good points,” Harbatsiuk said. “But finally I beat him.”

Ching won the fifth match for the Hornets defeating Arena 6-4, 6-4. “It was close in the score but not really in the play,” Ching said. “I’ve played the guy before in juniors, so I knew about how he played.”

Jimmy Roberts rallied after losing the first set 4-6 to Visagie, winning the second set 7-5. Visagie took control of the tie-breaking set and won 10-2.

The win improved the Hornets record to 7-4, including a perfect 3-0 in the Big Sky Conference. Northern Arizona dropped to 2-11 and 1-1 in the Big Sky.
