The Sac State women’s soccer team had its 14 home match unbeaten streak end with a 0-1 loss to Montana on Sunday.

For the senior players, it was the last home match of their collegiate careers. Prior to the match, a ceremony was held to thank the seven seniors for their contributions to the Sacramento State soccer program. Each player received flowers and shared the special moment with family. All seven seniors also started in their last home match.

The two teams battled evenly in a goalless first half. Both teams had five shots with both keepers having two saves each. Sac State had a slight advantage with five corner kicks.

The Hornets opened the second half with dominant play and creating numerous opportunities to score. Sacramento State’s defensive backline was also solid with the leadership and experience of senior defenders Kara Taylor and Tiffany Fraser.

Montana however got their chance and finished it properly with a goal scored by Sara Campbell in the 87th minute. Montana forward Kaitlyn Heinsohn passed a through ball pass the Sac State backline and found Campbell. Campbell connected to the pass with a right foot and found the back of the net.

With three minutes remaining the Hornets pushed numbers on the offensive front and pressured the Montana keeper with plenty of opportunities. Despite a few corner kicks and crosses that created opportunities to equalize, the Hornets lost 0-1.

Head coach Randy Dedini thought the Hornets were the better team that failed to win.

“We had plenty of chances,” Dedini said. “But that’s how soccer goes sometimes. Every time you let the door open, it only takes one mistake to lose.”

Overall, the Hornets outshot the Grizzlies (16-8) and in led in corner kicks (10-2). Montana keeper Grace Harris was clutch with 5 saves, 3 in the second half.

Sacramento State falls to a 8-7-1 record overall, and 2-2-0 in league. Montana improved to a 2-2-0 record in league.

The seven seniors were honored in the ceremony prior to their last home match; Tiffany Fraser, Sarah Howard, Jenny Lawrence, Missy Matzen, Rebeccah Phillips, Kayelyn Satkowski and Kara Taylor.
