Sacramento State women’s soccer played a grueling 110 minute 1-1 draw against visiting Seattle University on a scorching 102 degree Friday.

The Hornets took a first half lead in the 23rd minute with a beautiful goal finished by junior forward Kim Kemper. The play was started by Ashley Forbes who found Leah Larot making a run. Larot performed an excellent one touch pass to Kemper, who notched the goal from the top of the box.

Sac State controlled the majority of possession throughout most of the game; until, Jamie Coe of Seattle clinched the equalizer in the 56th minute. The goal was Seattle’s comeback, assisted by Kahlyn Keilty-Lucas that was triggered by a tricky cross on a corner kick by Kara Kuttler.

The match extended into overtime, which included two 10 minute halves. The Hornets executed many chances to win the game in the last minutes, but failed to capitalize as both teams exhibited stifling defenses. Senior goalie Jenny Lawrence went the distance between the pipes for the Hornets, with a total of five saves.

“I’m happy overall about the result,” head coach Randy Dedini said. “I would have liked it if we won the game, but the main thing is that we continue to improve.”

Head coach Dedini’s main focus is continuous improvement as the Hornets look towards the next match. “We will look to improve our attack, improve our speed of play, and look to capitalize more on our chances for goals.”

The Sacramento State women’s next match is Sept. 5 at UC Riverside. Be sure to support the Lady Hornets at their next home match, Sept. 12 against UC Davis.
