Campus community joins forces to fight cancer

This Saturday, the Sacramento State Striders, a group of students, staff and faculty, will walk together to raise funds for breast cancer research at the annual Susan G. Komen Race/Walk for the Cure at Cal Expo.

And it’s not too late to join. Whether you walk, run, volunteer or donate, group organizers urge others to sign up and stride against breast cancer.

“Everyone who participates is moved to be apart of it. You can sit on the sidelines or be in the parade and you are part of the team,” said Janet Dumonchelle, Student Health Center pharmacist and Sac State Striders coordinator.

Dumonchelle said it doesn’t take much to make a difference.

In the pharmacy at Sac State, a “change for the cure” jar for people to drop their spare change raised $60. The Striders have raised $1,200 this year, exceeding their $1,000 goal. Dumonchelle said the walk not only raises funds, but also connects those who have battled breast cancer or whose family or friends have.

“We are blessed to have three survivors on our team. Everyone on the team knows someone who struggles with it or died,” Dumonchelle said. “Unfortunately, breast cancer knows no age limit.”

Three years running now, the Striders hope to continue to unite the campus community and promote breast cancer awareness. With 52 members, the group continues to grow each year and encourages anyone to sign up and join them this Saturday.

The donation fee is $30 to walk in the race, but anyone can help out or donate any amount to the foundation.
