Students saved a few dollars on caffeine and learned about student government at Coffee and Conversations, the first of two events held today hosted by Associated Students, Inc.

Miguel Cervantes, executive vice president of ASI, spoke individually with students about ASI’s contributions, handing out brochures and fliers about programs like Peak Adventures and the Sac State Aquatic Center.

Chris Cheetham, junior studying teacher education, thought ASI only focused on the political side of the student government and didn’t realize ASI provided programs.

Cheetham also learned about the March for Higher Education taking place April 21 at the Capitol. He said he usually does not participate in these kinds of events, but is thinking about taking part because of the amount of collegiate participation.

April Gardner, junior child development major, stopped for the free coffee but learned about the ASI scholarships and laptop loan program.

Gardner said she was not informed about ASI prior to the event but may sign up for its scholarship service.

Cervantes said the goal of Coffee and Conversation was to give everyone a brief overview of what ASI is and does highlighting services available to students.

“Students were skeptical we were trying to sell them something,” Cervantes said. “(But) students left with a good impression of ASI.”

Angela Hong, ASI marketing coordinator, said the first Coffee and Conversation was held last year and has continued because of its success.

“Students are open to information and meeting the ASI members,” Hong said.
