The Sacramento State women’s tennis team lost to Denver Thursday at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club in Sacramento 6-1.

Junior Anastassia Lyssenko and sophomore Aileen Tsan defeated Bhavani Tirumurti and Annette Aksdal 8-6 in the No. 3 match to seal the Hornets’ only point in doubles.

The other doubles victory came from juniors Luba Schifris and Karina Jarlkaganova. They defeated Ute Schnoy and Kyla Iwinski 8-4 in the No. 2 match.

Singles play was grim for the Hornets who were without No. 41 ranked Katrina Zheltova. Freshman Melissa Valenzuela was also playing injured in the No. 1 match.

“We had a chance but it was kind of tough. We did all we could. Hopefully we get better and the girls are fine,” Schifris said.

The Hornets play Texas at 10 a.m. Saturday in Austin.
