UTAPS relocation could last two years or more

June 19 marked the end of an era, as demolition and construction forced University Transportation and Parking Services to relocate from Foley Hall to a less visible location off campus.

The move came as a direct result of the new on-campus residence hall, which is expected to cost an estimated $55 million and take approximately two years to complete.

UTAPS Director Nancy Fox said the UTAPS-funded move has yet to cause problems, although not all moving expenses have been summarized.

Fox said the current location at 7667 Folsom Blvd. is great, but that signage effectiveness has been an issue.

“We are working to make signage more effective,” Fox said. “Several large signs (have been) fastened to the?fences around the residence hall construction site. Large signage (has also been) placed on Folsom.”

Sacramento State students, Karly Dizon and Nick Caserza said moving UTAPS to an off-campus location is a bad idea.

“Having a building (that is) off campus, when students aren’t familiar with it, will make it difficult to find,” Dizon, a pre-nursing major, said.

“If (UTAPS) is off campus, student commuters will have difficulty with the familiarity of the surrounding area,” Caserza, a kinesiology major, said.

Fox said that parking, which is a dilemma for some, is not likely to be a problem at the new location and that short-term, customer parking will be available.

Fox said the process of purchasing a parking pass is easier than ever, as they are now available online. She said students can now manage their parking accounts, pay or appeal parking citations or update their email online.

While no official date has been set, Fox said she believes UTAPS will remain at its current off-campus location for at least two years.
