The Sacramento State men’s basketball team improved its standing in the Big Sky Conference with an 84-70 over Idaho State on Saturday night.

The Hornets (12-13, 6-6) are now tied for second place in conference with Northern Arizona after Joseth Dawson scored a game-high 23 points.

In front of a season high crowd of 1,302, Sac State set a program record, knocking down 17 3-pointers in the game. The previous record was 14, set against USC in 1991.

The Hornet offense was also spurred by Brandon Guyton, who sank five 3-pointers (four in the first half), and Joel Jones who finished with 12 points, eight assists and eight rebounds.

The Bengals (10-17, 5-7) were led by the Big Sky’s leading scorer Marquis Poole, who scored 21 points and dished out five assists but also was forced into turning the ball over seven times.

Sac State also outrebounded Idaho State 47-35.

The win gives the Hornets their most conference victories ever, besting a 5-9 record from last season.

The game was delayed for 48 minutes due to a campus-wide blackout that began with 5:16 left in the second half.

The Hornets will finish their season at Montana on Wednesday and Montana State on Sunday. Although Sac State is tied for second place in conference, with the top six teams qualifying for the postseason, the team is still not guaranteed a playoff spot. The last five teams in the conference — Portland State, Montana State, Montana, Weber State and Idaho State — all have a 5-7 conference record.

Eastern Washington has already clinched the top spot in the Big Sky. If the Hornets place second they will receive a bye in the first round. With a third or fourth place Sac State will host a first round playoff game on Saturday, March 6. With a fifth or sixth place finish they will play a first round game on the road.

The semi-finals and finals will take place at Eastern Washington on March 9-10.
