Professor captures images from overseas travels

Biology Professor Jana Shober is not a professional photographer, but when she travels abroad, she likes to capture each moment and share it.

Java City Coffee House on the first floor of the University Union is currently displaying her exhibit titled “Namaste India!” through Sept. 1, which includes temples, grand forts, deserts and lively festivals from a trip last year.

Shober said she loves to travel around the world and show different people what the world looks like.

“Travel, seeing the world, meeting and learning about people with different customs and of different cultures-is the primary focus of my trips,” Shober said.

Shober said the photographs are her way of remembering all the diverse and wonderful places and people, and to share her vision and experiences with others who may never even have considered visiting some of the more remote areas.

Still, people everywhere have something in common, she said. “We-all share the basics – working, caring for and loving our children and family, aspiring for something more and better than the situation we-may presently be in and having dreams,” Shober said.

Nicole Johnson, a senior liberal studies major, said she likes looking at the pictures in the coffee house.

“I feel that the pictures are really cultural, and I am not sure they belong in a coffee house,” Johnson said, adding that the images belong in a traditional exhibit.

Shober said she learned a lot from this photo shoot.

Natalie Kramer works at the Coffee House and said she enjoys seeing the pictures every day because the pictures add to her day.

“I like them. They are interesting and they bring life to a dark room,” Kramer said.

Shober said that every time she takes a trip, it makes her think of new ones, and she loves seeing new parts of the world.

“With each journey taken, ideas and hopes for three new ones emerge and the list grows longer and longer every year.”

Shober added that photography is a way-to share experiences with others and to keep many of the wonderful moments closer after the trip has ended.

Ashley Dai Zovi, a senior liberal studies major, said she loves going into the coffee shop and seeing the pictures and just enjoying them.

“I like them, because I really enjoy photography, people, landscapes, and the colors are beautiful,” Dai Zovi said.

Shober said there is something evident to her show: “What I enjoy photographing most are people.”
