Dominating all the way

The Sacramento State women’s gymnastics team downed two rivals in one meet and put the Hornets at 9-2 overall.

The Hornets won the all-around with a running score of 193.700 against Causeway rival UC Davis and Western Athletic Conference foe San Jose State.

Held at Spartan Gym on Friday night, San Jose State played host to the visiting UC Davis Aggies and Sac State.

The Spartans finished second on the night with an overall score of 193.050 and the Aggies finished last with a score of 191.450.

With the Hornets earning their highest score of the year, Coach Kim Hughes said he was proud of his team’s performance on its opponent’s home turf.

“I think it’s been quite a while since we beat (San Jose) in their own gym,” Hughes said.

It was also a career night for sophomore Marina Borisova, as she led or tied all competitors in four out of the five routines.

Borisova led in the vault (9.775), bars (9.875), floor (9.900), and the all-around (39.350); and came in a close second in the beam (9.800) by a margin of .025.

Borisova tied the school record in the all-around, and in preparation for a meet she said her goals are to break records.

“I don’t think of any school records, but one of my (personal) records,” Borisova said.

One of the main problems when playing on the road is facing the opponent’s home fans, according to Hughes. But this time around a host of Hornet followers nestled themselves amongst the home crowd.

Hughes said it was great to have the hometown fans and family supporting the team, and amongst the cheering faithful was former Hornet gymnast Brooke Morari.

Cheering on her former teammates, Morari said she loves the girls and thought the Hornets did a great job.

“It was a competitive meet (and) they kicked butt,” Morari said.

The win also earned Sac State 1.66 points in the Causeway Cup, putting the score at 36.67-31.66, with UC Davis with the slim lead.
