Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger reconfirmed his promise to not increase California State University fees by more than 10 percent each year while visiting Sacramento State on Monday.Schwarzenegger said California needs to make sure every student can go to college, college is affordable and that spaces in a university are available for every student.Reaching out and making sure that people’s lives are better tomorrow than they are today, that’s what public service is all about, Schwarzenegger said.During his visit, Schwarzenegger spoke about the state’s fiscal responsibility and his continued plans to pay down the state debt.Schwarzenegger said when he took over the governorship and the state’s debt, it was like taking over a dysfunctional house where the foundation was cracking. It was like there were broken windows and you couldn’t see the future of California, Schwarzenegger said. People said it couldn’t be done.In the past two-and-a-half years, Schwarzenegger said he has used a spike in revenue to pay down the debt, improving the state’s credit rating to pay less interest and save money for taxpayers. When you make mistakes, you have to notice them and make the corrections, Schwarzenegger said.Schwarzenegger told the audience that instead of raising taxes by $5 billion, he chose to stimulate the economy to pay down the debt.A budget is more than numbers. It tells about our character as a state, and we have to show responsibility, Schwarzenegger said. And Schwarzenegger credited the state for his success.I would not have the success that I have had without California, Schwarzenegger said. It’s a land of dreams that became a reality for me and now its time to give back.Despite the election this year, Schwarzenegger said republicans and democrats are working together.I am very proud of both parties and their willingness to do whats best for the state, Schwarzenegger said.Elizabeth Wilson can be reached at [email protected].
