Football in the eyes of the Tigers

The Sacramento State football team hits the road Saturday to face the Idaho State Bengals, looking for its fourth win of the season.

Coming off of a narrow 14-9 win against Northern Colorado last Saturday, the defensive unit had a solid red-zone performance. On the Bear’s three trips to the red-zone, the Hornet defense allowed only three field goals and no touchdowns.

“The defense played a very well against a good running back and a solid offensive line,” coach Steve Mooshagian said.

The Hornets, averaging 75.8 yards a game in penalties, only had five infractions for 21 yards.

The team will be looking to face an Idaho State team that is “better than their record,” Mooshagian said, with an offense ranked 3rd in scoring and passing.

But the Bengal’s offense fell short last week in a 23-10 loss to Montana. The offense was held to 92 total yards; 46 yards were in the air and 46 on the ground.

Bengal’s senior quarterback Matt Gutierrez, a transfer from University of Michigan, threw 9-25 for 46 yards and one interception.

Despite Idaho State’s performance last week, the team is preparing for a balanced running and passing attack, Mooshagian said.

The game will also feature the top two tacklers of the Big Sky Conference competing for the top spot as sophomore middle linebacker Cyrus Mulitalo leads the conference with 93 total tackles and Idaho State middle senior linebacker Pago Togafau is second with 92.

The Hornets will be going into the game without freshman tackle Jordan Hunter and perhaps junior safety Brent Webber, who leads the conference in picks with 6. Webber injured his shoulder in the Northern Colorado game, but is expected to play Saturday.

Webber participated in practice during the middle of the week and was performing strength training for his shoulders.

“Knowing Webber, he should get himself back,” Mooshagian said.
