Web destination for 2010 plans

Destination 2010 has made its premiere on the Internet at www.csus.edu/destination2010. The initiative’s progress and focus are featured on the Web site for Sacramento State’s campus community and the surrounding community to check out.

Associate Vice President of Public Affairs Frank Witlatch said that the Web site shines a spotlight on Destination 2010 — the guiding initiative for making Sacramento State a premier metropolitan university and the destination campus of the west.

“It’s very important that everyone on campus and off campus that has an interest in Sacramento State has an understanding of what we want to do,” Witlatch said.

The initiative includes four main goals — foster excellent academic and student programs, build a welcoming campus, create a dynamic physical environment, and develop community support — that are featured on the Web Site. Under each goal is information on how the university plans to reach that specific initiative, and its current progress.

“People had a rough understanding about what those (the initiatives) meant. What we’ve done is really focused ourselves and said here is exactly what we want to accomplish,” Witlatch said.

The Web site, Witlatch said, is beneficial for Sac State because it keeps the university focused and headed in the right direction. “It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day activities of the university and having a clear agenda is useful. Having a clear long-time agenda is useful, it’s a ‘keeping your eyes on the prize’ kind of thing,” Witlatch said.

Witlatch said the initiative and its Web site is a good thing for prospective and current students, as well as alumni. It gives these groups of people a means to see the university’s goals and to see what to expect in the years to come, he said.

Destination 2010 also receives accountability, Witlatch said, with this Web site by sharing the plans and progress of each principle. The Web site, Witlatch said, will be updated twice a year — in the fall and spring.

The Web site is maintained by Public Affairs. Executive Vice President Joseph Sheley, Witlatch said, got everyone focused on picking the priorities and the content of the Web site. Public Affairs, working with President Alexander Gonzalez’s cabinet, will continue to format and update the Web site. The Web site — hosted by Sac State’s server — was added with only the cost of staff time.
