Sutter hall brings no excitement to dorm life

Many people have stereotypes of what dorm life is about: The dorm life is thought to be full of parties, drinking and sex; or at least more action and socializing.

And some students expected this type of life from the dorms, until they actually experienced it and learned that is not that type of life at all ?” at least not in Sutter Hall.

“I was expecting more people to live on campus and didn’t realize this was such a commuter school, so there isn’t much to do on weekends,” Jonathan Pineda, a freshman with an undeclared major said. “It seems like everyone goes home on weekends,” Pineda, a Sutter Hall resident said.

Jesus Arroyo, a sophomore majoring in civil engineering said this is his second year living in the campus dorms.

Arroyo previously lived in Draper Hall and said Sutter Hall has more older and international students

Arroyo and Pineda said people in Sutter keep to themselves, stay within their own groups and that most people don’t even know each other.

“It kinda feels like high school, the way people stay in clicks,” Arroyo said.

Pineda said Sutter Hall resident advisers, RAs, act fairly.

“The RAs in Sutter Hall are pretty relaxed and let you do your own thing and only enforce problems,” Pineda said.

Another Sutter Hall resident had a different opinion about the RAs.

A student, who preferred to remain anonymous, said the RAs walk around smelling rooms for drugs, such as marijuana.

He said had a friend who was caught with marijuana in the dorm by the RA smelling the room. Once the room was inspected, a bong and beer cans were found, he said.

Since he was only 19-years-old, the beer was illegal too. The friend ended up being kicked out of the dorm and given a warning to have no other problems on campus, or he would be expelled.

Pineda and Arroyo said that there wasn’t much action that went on in their dorm.

“Supposedly, Desmond Hall has all the parties,” Arroyo said.

It seems the biggest complaint the dorm residents have is about the food served in the dorms’ Dining Commons, also known as the DC.

“The food is pretty crappy,” Pineda said.

He also said the food in the DC is overpriced compared to other campuses he has visited.

“Variety is not good. If you miss a meal, only junk food like chips and ice cream is available,” Pineda said.

Pineda’s other complaint was not being able to control the heat in the rooms.

“I wake up in the morning freezing,” Pineda said.

The parties aren’t frequent in Sutter, so it seems the biggest excitement there is its new plasma television set.
