See former Sac State students ‘stick it’ on the big screen

The movie “Stick It “was teeny-bopper heaven. It was full of cute boys, catty girls and clever one-liners.

The storyline went a little bit like this: A punk-rocker teen, Haley Graham (Missy Peregrym) gets into some trouble with the law when she smashes her BMX bike though a window, racking up quite a property damage bill.

The judge gives her the option of jail time or a few months at the Vickerman Gymnastics Academy.

Apparently she got a very lenient judge.

Burt Vickerman (Jeff Bridges) is an ex-gymnast and current coach of the elite gymnastics academy. He tries to get Haley to take some pride in her ability and compete again.

Eventually, Haley’s competitive nature gets the better of her and she begins to train, provoked by the less-talented “mean girl” Joanne (Vanessa Lengies.)

The movie plot was very predictable with a little flirtation and romance thrown in for kicks.

A great scene occurs towards the end when the girls tried on prom dresses and ended up doing gymnastics tumbling around the store in bright chiffon.

It was hysterical and caused quite a crowd reaction. The crowd screamed, laughed and squealed- they loved it.

Of course, the audience was predominantly composed of middle-school aged girls.

Though the storyline was not particularly believable and the acting was not Oscar-worthy, no one expected it to be. This is the beauty of a chick-flick.

As far as this type of movie goes, this was one of the greats. It was quick and cute, with a great ending message; perfect for the pre-teen audience that packed the theater.

The director of Stick It, Jessica Bendinger, is definitely known for her easy cheesy films like “Bring It On” and “Aquamarine.”

But she also worked on the TV series “Sex and the City,” giving her definite credibility, reflected by in the humor of this film.

This movie is great for gymnastic teams that need a little pre-meet boost or for anyone who enjoys a good chick-flick. It was cute and sassy and a lot of fun.

Rating: 3 out of 4 stars.
