New ‘study’ spot
January 10, 2007
If your route to school happens to take you past Folsom Blvd. between State Hornet Drive East and 65th, you may have noticed The Library, a quaint, rugged little building across the street from Sacramento State’s capitol public radio. Although there are books along the back of one wall I can almost guarantee you no one is reading.
During the day the parking lots may be empty and the crowds nonexistent, but on Tuesdays be sure to arrive early or be prepared to walk – after 9 p.m. you will not believe you are in the same place.
Instead of going to Sacramento State’s library on a Tuesday to do homework, it appears that everyone has found drinking and dancing at The Library on 7042 Folsom Blvd. a more entertaining subject.
My friends and I decided to visit the Library on a Tuesday night to see for ourselves what all the buzz was about. We arrived at 11 p.m. to a packed parking lot and a huge line that rapped around the side of the building. All hopes for a fun filled evening started to fade until we were handed Library cards.
Library cards are passes that allow someone to not wait in line, not pay the $10 cover charge and receive $2 well drinks all night. The best thing about them is that they are valid every Tuesday until December 6.
After gaining access past the highly guarded door, the slightly crowded entry way divides into two rooms. To the Left DJ Gabe Xavier spins currents hits as well as some unforgettable classic dance mixes staged before a somewhat snug dance floor and a few tall tables.
The room directly ahead contains the bar, a few more tables, and in the background some shelves and books. I couldn’t tell from a far if the books were actually real. I was going to check, but it is extremely easy to get distracted there.
The line to get a beverage is about three people deep but, moves pretty fast. The Library also features an enormous patio filled with tables ?” the perfect place to smoke, get some air or have a conversation.
The three rooms all seem to have a different vibe and atmosphere. The dance floor is fast paced and high energy. Everyone is dancing with everyone else and all together in one large mass.
The bar room was crowded, although the tables were pretty much empty for most of the night and seemed to basically serve as a refueling station.
The outside patio appeared to be where everyone went to talk, mingle and socialize.
The crowd is extremely diverse and well dressed. I strongly advise everyone to dress-to-impress and wear your most stylish outfit. If you don’t, you may find yourself not fitting in with everyone else that did.
The women were wearing everything from skirts to dresses, and jeans to black pants. The consensus seemed to be more trendy-glam fashion with a touch of sparkle. I counted at least six girls wearing $150 designer jeans.
The men’s outfits were just as current and stylish and varied from pressed button-up shirts and slacks to a rock n’ roll t-shirt paired with jeans.
After drinking, mingling and dancing until about 1:30 a.m., we left with a big smile and extra money in our pocket (we rarely have money left at the end of the night.) We had a great time that Tuesday and were looking forward to being able to come back again soon.
The Library is definitely worth visiting to catch the buzz, but it might be a good idea to get there shortly after the doors open at 8 p.m. The line can take a long time to get through after 9 p.m. and especially during peak times such as 11 p.m. It is rumored the wait time can exceed one hour.
In addition, the cover charge and club-priced drinks can hit your student budget pretty heavily – especially with multiple visits.
It appears The Library has – at least for now – become the new and exciting hot spot. Although waiting in line, paying a cover and full price for drinks may not sound too bad it just isn’t the same without a Library Card.
Although Industrial Night on Tuesdays is strictly for the 21 and over, College Night on Thursdays are reserved for the 18 and over.
So here’s your chance to get some “studying” done. Get your ticket to the Library’s College Night every Thursday by sending your first and last name to [email protected] before Nov. 1.
You could use your Sac State library card to do homework and study, but why when you can use this one to dance and party.
