Gubernatorial candidate and state Treasurer Phil Angelides unveiled his new television advertisement entitled “Once Again,” as a part of his statewide campus campaign Tuesday at Sacramento State.

The advertisement ?” focused on higher education ?” shows Angelides promising students that he will roll back college tuition and fees, increase financial aid and double the number of high school counselors, so children will be prepared for college.

Angelides told the students who attended the College Democrat forum that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been the “worst” governor for higher education.

He said he stood up against the governor since he was elected into office.

Angelides said he took this stand and believes the governor should be out of office because Schwarzenegger, he said, reduced funding, cut financial aid and increased fees for higher education.

The candidate said more young people need to go to college. He said he wants to expand financial aid and Cal Grant scholarships in order to increase the student enrollment in colleges.

He also said more high school counselors are needed, for California has the lowest ratio in the nation with one counselor for every 800 students.

“It’s a travesty,” Angelides said.

He said it is important to have children go on to college in order to compete internationally.

“We’re not going to win unless we have younger people who can compete in the global economy,” Angelides said.

Robbie Abelon, Associated Students Inc. executive vice president, said Angelides is a friend of the students, and said Angelides does not want people to miss out on college.

Angelides promised the students that he will not only make higher education the focus of his candidacy, but if elected, he promised to make higher education the centerpiece of his governorship.
