An announced crowd of 8,143 spectators showed up to Hornet Stadium on Saturday evening to watch as the Sacramento State Hornets lost to third-ranked Cal Poly 17-10 in a four-quarter battle.

Crosby Wehr started for the Hornets at quarterback, but in the Hornets’ third offensive series first year transfer Marcel Marquez took the snaps until the end of regulation. Marquez was 6-17 with a pick for 40-yards, but was second in rushing for the Hornets with 11 carries for 38 yards. Marquez’s aggressive running style concerned his teammates and his coach when he began taking tackles head-on.

“I would of preferred if he would’ve slid or ran out of bounds, but that’s the hardest those DB’s will get hit by a quarterback,” Coach Steve Mooshagian said.

This was Marquez’s first game with the team as he was unable to suit up against Boise State because of a transfer hold.

The Hornets held the Mustangs offense to 98-yards rushing and gave up 258 yards in the air, 200 of which came from Mustangs’ wide receiver Ramses Barden and his two touchdowns.

The Mustangs fumbled three times, two of which were forced by the Hornets’ defense.Middle Linebacker Cyrus Mulitalo lead the team in tackles with 12 and senior outside linebacker Tyson Butler finished the game with nine tackles, two fumble recoveries and a fumble return for 79 yards.

“I’m proud of our defense and the way they played. They worked their butts off,” Butler said.
