On the second floor of the University Union, the men’srestroom adjacent to the Union Gallery is missingsoap. The spring semester started Jan. 23, and for overthree weeks men were unable access suds while washing their hands in that restroom.

On Feb. 6 one soap dispenserwas installed in the restroom, but it had to be screwedinto the wall Friday morning and still contained nosoap.

Over the winter break, the soap dispensers in the Union restrooms were replaced with wall-mounted foam dispensers. Theft, or the possibility of it being looked over during replacing, may be the reason for the missing soap dispensers, said Assistant Director ofOperations Donald Tucker of the University Union.

In the fall semester, theUnion was seeing a string of thefts of the soapbottles, according to Tucker.

“People were unscrewing the bottles underneath thesink so we wanted to change over to a wall mounteddispenser,” Tucker said.

California Health and Safety code 114115 states thatsome type of hand washing cleanser needs to beprovided in dispensers at, or adjacent to, handwashing facilities.

Ralph Madriaga, a freshmanpre-nursing major, was shocked to find that there wasno soap dispensers in the men’s room.

“I find it very surprising there wasn’t any soap,”Madriaga said. “It probably should be a priority.”

Hornet staff contacted Tucker on Friday about anyfurther problems with the new foam dispensers. TheUnion may have to screw the dispensers into the wallsinstead of using the adhesive, Tucker said.
