Big Sky Conference women’s basketball preview

At 5-7, the Sacramento State women’s basketball team opens its Big Sky Conference schedule at 7 p.m. Thursday at home against Idaho State.

The Hornets are perfect at home (5-0) and winless on the road (0-7). Sac State, which has a nine-day layoff before its conference opener, made its first conference tournament appearance last season.

Here is a look at the Hornets’ Big Sky competition this season:

Eastern Washington (7-7)

Head Coach: Wendy Schuller

Key Win: St. Mary’s 63-53

Leading Scorer: Joanna Chadd (11.5)

Leading rebounder: Felice Moore (6.3)

Assists leader: Phynique Allen (2.8)

Game dates: Feb 2 @ Sac State, March 4 @ Eastern Washington

Notes: Eight of the team’s 14 players went to high school in the state of Washington-Eight players on the team are 6-0 or taller-The team’s assist leader, guard Phynique Allen, is a freshman.

Portland State (6-7)

Head Coach: Charity Elliott

Key Win: at San Jose State 68-62

Leading Scorer: Kelsey Kahle (16.9)

Leading Rebounder: Kelsey Kahle (8.9)

Assists leader: Jenni Ritter (3.1)

Notes: The team’s assist leader, Jenni Ritter, is a freshman … Sac State’s seven wins over Portland State represent the most wins against a Big Sky team in the Division I era … Head coach Charity Elliott’s husband, Chris Elliott, is an assistant coach on the team- Junior Heather Arns led the Big Sky in steals (2.69) last season.

Montana (14-2)

Head Coach: Robin Selvig

Notes: Picked to finish first in the Big Sky Coaches Preseason Poll-Montana has more freshmen (6) and sophomores (6) than any other team in the Big Sky-Head Coach Selvig was named Big Sky Conference Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year last season-Montana has eight players who are at least 6-0 tall and four are freshman.

Montana State (2-12)

Leading rebounder: Amanda DeHaan (6.6)

Assists leader: Alyssa Nelson (4.2)

Notes: Scotta Morton was named the Big Sky Player of the Week last week – Montana State has no seniors on their squad – The team’s leading rebounder, DeHaan, is a freshman – The team hasn’t won a road game this season.
