Associated Students Inc. hit the Library Quad Thursday in hopes to get their name out to students while informing the campus community about the upcoming gubernatorial election.

With a large sign directing students to register to vote at the ASI table, ASI members handed out flyers about a few bills passed by the state Legislature that deal with higher education as they rounded up students to sign applications to vote.

ASI will continue speaking with students about signing up to vote in the upcoming weeks.

A voter registration drive will be held on Tuesday in the Quad, as part of We the Students Week, which was formerly titled Constitution Week. Information on bills will also be handed out at the week’s events.

Olgalilia Ramirez, director of the Office of Governmental Affairs with ASI, said the purpose of that week is get students involved on campus with community and political issues.

We want students to become informed voters, she said.

The week-long event will kick off Monday with a forum entitled Immigrant vs. Illegal Immigrant. Ramirez said the hot-topic forum will be held in the Orchard Suite of the University Union.

A State of the Students Address will also be held at noon on Sept. 21 in the Redwood Room.

Also, former vice president Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, a film that showcases the causes and effects of global warming will be shown for free on Sept. 21 in the University Union Ballroom. Showtimes are 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. A panel discussion will be held at 8:40 p.m.

The week will close on Friday with an event, entitled Envisioning California and hosted by the Center for California Studies, that will prepare people for leadership.

Other voter registration drives will occur before the Nov. 7 election.

Miguel Cervantes, ASI’s representative for the California State Student Association, said the student body government’s goal is to get 1,700 students to register to vote.

The goal came from CSUwide competition with other student body governments. Sacramento State’s direct rival for this voter registration competition is CSU Northridge. The winner of the competition will have to wear the other campus’ apparel at conferences.
