Hornets get trampled by Broncos

BOISE, Idaho -Jared Zabransky threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, and Chris Petersen won his debut as Boise State’s coach in a 45-0 win over Sacramento State on Thursday night.
The Broncos scored on four of their first five possessions and dominated both sides of the ball in building a 28-0 halftime lead.
It was far different opener from last season for Boise State, who lost at then No. 13 Georgia 48-13. Sacramento State, a Division I-AA program from the Big Sky Conference, couldn’t match the Broncos’ speed on offense or defense.
After getting intercepted four times in the opener last year, Zabransky was far more careful with the ball than. He completed 11 of 20 passes for 181 yards with no interceptions Thursday, and ran eight times for 31 yards before being pulled early in the second half.
Zabransky threw a 52-yard TD pass to Drisan James early in the third quarter for a 35-0 Broncos’ lead.
Boise State’s defense limited the Hornets to one first down in the first half and 33 total yards of offense. The Broncos also intercepted Sacramento State quarterback Tim Brockwell twice. Meanwhile, the Broncos’ offense rolled up 222 yards in the first half.
Ian Johnson ran for 89 yards on 13 carries and scored twice on runs of 19 yards and 4 yards in the first quarter.
Petersen became the Broncos’ head coach in December after five years as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, taking over after Dan Hawkins left to become head coach at Colorado.
