The new Calaveras Station Literary Journal was released on May 5, featuring poems, short fiction, non-fiction and other short works written by Sacramento State students.

“Each year we dedicate the book to a retiring professor, this year we chose Professor (Robert) Meindl,” said Evan Brengle, co-editor of the Calaveras Station,

The audience participated in an afternoon of readings beginning with Meindl, who read an introductory preface leading into a poem. His reading was preceded by readings from contributing student writers featured in the journal.

A total of 16 students were chosen for this year’s journal. Many submitted multiple pieces that were used in the journal.

“This is a great resource for students to get published,” Brengle said.

In addition to the work of students, the journal includes several of Meindl’s poems and a literary analysis of Meindl’s work written by Colt Blackmore, who first met Meindl in one of his seminars, according to the journal.

The journal is currently most used within the English department, but other departments are encouraged to take advantage of it, Brengle said.

Douglas Rice, an adviser for Calaveras Station, hopes to expand the journal and the scope of its audience.

Rice said he will developing the Web site for the journal and will be working on the design of either a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM to be ideally attached to the journal.

Within this technology, Rice hopes to include audio readings of students, artwork by students in the art department and music recitals from students in the music department.

Brengle and Rice stressed the participation of faculty and students from other departments. “My dream is to run a national fiction contest in connection with Calaveras Station,” Rice said.

Calaveras Station’s Literary Journal is now available for purchase at the English department.
