Sac State signs Bobby Guillory to football letter of intent

Bobby Guillory, a football and track standout at Vallejo’s Bethel High, signed a National Letter of Intent to play football at Sacramento State on Wednesday afternoon.

In all, Sac State football coach Steve Mooshagian announced the signing 15 more players who will be newcomers this fall in addition to five mid-year transfers. Wednesday was the initial signing date for the National Letter of Intent program and high school student athletes can sign as late as April first. Student athletes who sign a letter of intent must attend that institution for one year and in exchange the institution agrees to provide athletics financial aid for at least one year ?” provided the student is eligible ?” pursuant to NCAA rules.

Guillory, a quarterback and defensive back, is the star of the class as he was rated as a four-star recruit and the 21st best defensive back by scout.com. In his final two high school seasons Guillory rushed for more than 2,100 yards and 37 touchdowns while leading Bethel to a Division II Sac-Joaquin Section playoff appearance in 2005. He was also named the Vallejo Times Herald athlete of the year and honorable mention all-metro by the Sacramento Bee.

“Bobby is very versatile, he gives us another dimension,” Mooshagian said. Also among the new swarm of Hornets is local product Bill Sherman ?” a 6-foot-2, 270-pound defensive lineman. Sherman, a native of nearby Loomis, was on Del Oro High’s 13-0 Division III Sac-Joaquin Section championship team last season as he garnered all-league, all-metro, first team all-Northern California, third team all-state and Bee defensive player of the year honors. As a senior Sherman recorded at least two tackles in every game while tallying 51 for the season.

The most heavily signed position for the 2006 recruiting class was on the offensive line ?” arguably the Hornets’ biggest weakness in 2005. Five high school players signed at the position in addition to two midyear junior college transfers including former St. Patrick’s High and Solano Junior College standout Matt Russell, who spent last season at Missouri.

“(The offensive line) was the weakest part of our football team last season,” Mooshagian said. “Recruiting that was a top priority.”Of the 21 new players announced, three played at Grossmont Junior College in El Cajon, two are from Del Oro and two are from Glendale Community College in Glendale, Ariz. “We got immediate help with the junior college transfers and we built for the future with some solid high school recruits,” Mooshagian said. “It’s a very strong class ?” especially in the Big Sky.”Position breakdown
