It’s now official: the inaugural Causeway Cup winners are the UC Davis Aggies.

Davis defeated the Sacramento State baseball team 4-1 on Friday afternoon, capturing the last points they needed to secure the Cup victory.

In addition, because of the loss, the Hornets also lost out on the chance to raise the Causeway Cup. Entering the game, Sac State had 29.75 points to Davis’ 52.00. The Davis program picked up the final point it needed to push its score to 53.00 out of a possible 105.00, making it impossible for Sac State to win.

Friday’s game was scoreless until Davis broke through in the fourth inning.

David Huffman smoked a single up the middle, scoring Daniel Baldini from second base, giving the Aggies a 1-0 lead.

Davis would tack on another run in the fifth when Kevin James knocked in Daniel Descalso with an infield single that ricocheted off Hornet reliever Warren Rosebrock’s glove, making the score 2-0.

The Aggies put the game away in the eighth inning, when they padded their lead with two more runs.

Tyler LaTorre produced Davis’ third run, sending home Lukas Kirby from third with a sacrifice fly; Huffman then sent home his second run of the day with a single, scoring James, giving the Aggies a comfortable 4-0 lead.

The Hornets got their only run in the bottom of the ninth, when second baseman Taylor Watanabe laced a double down the left field line, scoring designated hitter Pedro Santiago. That would be all the scoring for the Hornets, though, as they lost to their cross-causeway rivals.

With the loss, the Hornets fell to 8-18-1 on the season; the Aggies improved to 15-10.

The series now shifts to Dobbins Stadium on the UC Davis campus for Saturday’s 1 p.m. contest before the Hornets return home on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the series’ finale.
